Pruning Workshop

On Saturday, October 7th, 2006 the Xeriscape Council hosted a pruning workshop at the Demonstration Garden at Gila Community College-Payson Campus. It was taught by Maricel Schneider, Horticulturist and owner of Agave Designs, a landscape and design company, to help everyone understand how to prune low-water use plants.

She demonstrated how and where to cut for best growth, form, flowers, and branching. She also showed how to remove “parasite” branches, as well as dead and diseased parts. She explained the importance of cleaning up under plants to avoid pest and disease problems that could occur. She also covered what time is year is best to prune which types of plants and which ones need to be re-trimmed as the season goes on.It was a hands-on workshop and everyone was allowed to practice what they had just learned. There were 15 interested gardeners in attendance.
